When it comes to buying a gift for a fisherman the choices can be overwhelming and the decision as to what type of gift said fisherman will enjoy can be difficult to impossible, especially if you the gift giver tend not to be much of an angler yourself. The best place to start when it comes to fishing gifts is to begin the search with the type of fishing that the person receiving said gift enjoys the most.
Now, there are obviously many types or styles of fishing that are available to anglers, but normally individual types and styles of fishing will revolve around certain fish species. The person may like to fish for bass, walleye, trout, or salmon (to name just a few) and the type the gift that you choose should relate to the type of fish or style of fishing that the person most enjoys “wetting a line” for most.
In this article I will call upon on my twenty plus years of experience fishing for the species of fish known as trout and list 3 trout fishing gifts that any avid trout fisherman or woman would not only find clever, but also incredibly useful the next time that they head out onto the water in search of trout.
1. A Retractor – Retractors make great trout fishing gifts because they are simple, yet incredibly time saving and useful when you are on the water. A retractor is simply a small sphere with a swivel hook attached to it that attaches to your fishing vest, on which you can clip all of your lightweight fishing utensils, such as nail clippers for snipping line or hemostats for removing hooks from a trout’s mouth. Retractors are a “must have” item for almost any trout fisherman.
2. A Pair Of Wristies – For those of you who don’t know what a pair of Wristies are, they are simply a lightweight pair of fleece fingerless gloves and they are among the best trout fishing gifts that you can give to an avid trout fisherman. You see when trout fishing in cool to cold weather, no matter if you are fly fishing or drift fishing, it is often necessary to tie knots and/or “feel” your line as you fish and a pair of fingerless gloves helps to keep your hands warm while leaving your fingers naked for accomplishing the aforementioned tasks. Quality fingerless gloves can be a Godsend and have saved many a fishing trip for me personally during the spring and fall trout fishing seasons.
3. A Pair of Hemostats – A pair of hemostats is the best way to remove small fishing hooks from the mouth of a trout and are therefore something that every trout fisherman needs to have in his or her arsenal. For the couple of bucks that a pair or two of hemostats will cost you, it would have to be among the best trout fishing gifts that you can give to the person who enjoys fishing for trout.
Now, are the only gifts that you can give a trout fisherman? Of course not, but they are certainly 3 gifts that will make any trout fisherman happy. The bottom line is that if the person spends any amount of time of the water fishing for trout any of the aforementioned trout fishing gifts would be very well received.
